Blood Orange Gummy Candy

Blood Orange Gummy Candy

Real oranges in a gummy candy?!  I say YES to that! This easy blood orange gummy candy recipe uses real fruit without any added colors or flavors. These gummies taste great and are easy to make. Make them for your child’s school lunch bag or keep them on hand as a snack with a punch of vitamin C. There are only three ingredients in this recipe. You can even vary the amount of sugar to your liking. These gummy candies are bouncy and full of flavor.

Featured Ingredient – Gelatin

Gelatin is a flavorless, colorless, jelly-like substance. It’s often used to thicken soups or to make desserts like jello and mousse. It comes as a dry powder, which you then dissolve in hot water for use.  Gelatin is not vegetarian. Substitutes for gelatin are agar agar, which is typically made from algae; pectin, which is derived from fruit and vegetables; or vegan jel which is made with vegetable gum.  Vegan jel and agar agar powder can be used as a 1:1 substitute for gelatin. Pectin firms up more than gelatin, so you might need to play around with the amount if using it as a substitute for gelatin. More substitutes and information can be found in this Mashed article.

Tips

To make things easy, I blended the entire orange (without the peel or seeds) in a high speed blender. Using this method, you don’t need to worry about pulp because it all gets finely blended and pulverized in the juice. It’s less waste and all the nutrients and fiber get included in the final product. Bonus!

Ingredients

  • 2 medium oranges, peeled
  • 3 packets (about 3 tablespoons) gelatin
  • 2 tbsp sugar, to taste

Instructions

  • Cut the peeled oranges in half to remove any seeds.
  • Using a blender, blend the oranges into a juice.
  • Pour the orange juice into a pot or sauce pan and warm over medium low heat. Do not boil.
  • Add the gelatin and sugar to the orange juice and stir to dissolve. Once dissolved, taste for sweetness and add more sugar if desired.
  • Pour the mixture into candy molds or in a flat bottomed dish. Chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes until firm.
  • After the gummies are fully cooled and firm to the touch, remove from the candy molds or dish. If using a dish, slice into cubes or any shape desired.

Notes

For this recipe, I blended the whole peeled oranges, including the part that separates each segment.  I found that juicing the oranges by hand didn’t yield much juice and wasn’t worth the effort.  Using the whole orange is probably also more nutritious.
